Gtx Titan Haquadro K5000 For Mac
Posted : admin On 09.03.2020Ok, I hate to bring this up, but the debate never had a satisfying resolution for me. The big question being: In what ways does Avid software benefit from the use of a Quadro video card over a Geforce video card. Before you answer, I know the Quadro's are more stable, but I never ran into an unstable Geforce nor any driver issues in the 10 years I have used them. I have worked with Quadro equipped composers, but never could tell the difference in speed, rendering and transcoding between my sets and those. I use my Geforce cards with modified QualifiedGpuBoards file, so the software acknowledges the video cards and indeed uses their power calculating certain effects. But seeing how Adobe's mercury engine improves on that with coding I tend to get a bit jealous while waiting for the transcoding to finish.
I don't need the 10 bit output Quadro cards offer, nor the precise way they render in 3D animation programs. So, do the Quadro cards cater abilities to Avid software I have yet to find out, or is it a matter of Avid testing drivers and cards for the professional market only as they do with approved workstations? I would understand that, there are just too many possibilities out there and to test them all would make the software prohibitively expensive. But if so, I would like to know.
At the moment I have to decide between a Geforce Titan and a Quadro K5000. The K5000 is twice as expensive at roughly half the speed it offers in other programs I use, like After Effects, Premiere, Resolve and various coding programs. Yet Avid remains my main program.
If the only thing a graphic card does for Avid is to speed up 3D effects then the choice is really simple. Thanks in advance for your answers. Unfortunately it is not so easy to give a guaranteed technically correct answer. There are really 3 different places you can get your answers from 1. People like me who know about MC and how it works on their own computer (mine is home built, by the way) but don't have much technical knowledge of computers 2.
People who know about MC and how it works on their computers and have a deep knowledge of computers and their technical workings 3. Avid technicians who are involved in the development and testing. The only source that is in a position to give the correct technical answer is Avid! Here on the forums you are talking with non-Avid technical staff. Although we can offer a lot of ideas and theories - we cannot give you the full technical based answer. The forums here have asked for a white paper on the things that you are asking about. We have not seen such a document yet.
It is futile to keep pressing the members of this forum for an answer to your question. We cannot give one. My own personal view on the situation - in a non technical explanation is In the early days of Avid's editing applications there was a demand that users had the tested and certified cards. They were the only cards, in those days, that could be relied upon to deliver. Nowadays other cards may have 'caught up' and probably can do just as well as the certified cards - but, at the moment, they have not been certified by Avid. Maybe Avid does not have enough resources to test a wider range of cards.
That is understandable. They have had staff cuts over the past years that must have depleted their resources when it comes to testing cards. Sorry that I am on the verge of speculating - but that is what I believe. Wrapping up: I do not think that you can get a correct technical answer to your question from the regular member of these forums.

Hi Douglas, Thank you for your response. In no way was it my intention to harrass members on this forum with my questions.
If that the impression you got from my post my sincere apologies. I have been reading several posts concerning this issue, but most of the time it was a sideline to an already existing discussion or it took place a while back and with the advent of Cuda, openGL drivers for GF cards etc. The landscape may have changed. I concur with your views and like I said I'd understand if Avid doesn't check every graphics card on the market. If only they would tell us as much.
I guess what I was hoping for was a user who had the opportunity to test both cards in the same setup being able to tell me what the difference is. Regards, Rinze.
