Hey, i recently upgraded my 2nd harddrive (non-ssd) to a WD Blue 3TB, migrated the data over no issues and have been running it for a couple weeks now. Since day one i've heard a very inaudible click every once in a while, like 10-20x per Hour or something. My suspicion is that it might be parking its head / going to standby?

The issue becomes visible when i get a whole system freeze every once in a while when i attempt to do some action, as if the system waits for the drive to spin up, but the freeze only lasts for 1-2 seconds. Has anyone experienced this before and can help me possibly? Drivers are up to date, Windows 7 64 Bit. AFAIK, standby (sleep) and head parking are 2 different things. You can change the sleep settings in Control Panel, Power Options, Change plan settings, Change advanced power settings, Hard disk, Turn off hard disk after. Head parking can be set by an older WD program called wdidle3; but it doesn't work for all WD drives and can cause issues for some.

I use WD My Passport external drives. They have excessive head parking and wdidle3 won't work with them, so I use CrystalDiskInfo to disable head parking; but this requires the program to be run every time the external drive is plugged in (don't know if internal drives remember this setting).

Hello kinsi55! WD Blue 3TB are from the new series of Blue drives, merged with the Green series, so the 5400 RPM versions have inherited the Green features. Still, the clicking sounds you say the drive is making could mean a faulty drive.:/ My advice would be to test the drive's health using its dedicated software, the. Do a Quick test and if it passes – an Extended one. It will take hours the Extended test, as it checks each and every bit of the drive for errors. Also, post a screenshot of the SMART values of the drive. Good luck and post back!

Edit: Quick test passed. Did the blue series also inherit the 8s head parking? Because this might explain my issues, since while running the extended test right now i do not get the click any more (probably because the harddrive is fully in use?) would wdidle3 help in this case?

I suppose the Quick test passed, too? The new Blue family of HDDs have inherited the IntelliSeek features from the Green drives (5400 RPM HDD versions), a bit more detail on the transition you can read in this and in the. The drive seems healthy, so most probably the Green features are what's causing the issue. Best way to use this drive would be as a data drive only.:/ About the software you asking of, it may not work as this drive is of the new series.

You could try, but I advise having back ups. Still, best case would be to use the drive for data storage only. Best of luck! CKWD. Just to give feedback, changing the idle time to 300 seconds instead of 8 indeed did fix my issues, and removed the clicking i mentioned before (probably caused by parking the head). Although, the blues are marketed as 'desktop' drives, so one would think you can use them as your main system drive. In my case its a secondary to my SSD, but the issue is obvious, it wears down fast as nothing if the head has to park / unpark dozens of times per hour.

Theres reports all around the internet about this issue: Keeping it at 8 seconds for green drives makes sense, but for blues it should at least be at 60 seconds as the stock setting. Thanks for all the help again, and have a good day. I'm sorry, i have not simply copied over my games.

I uninstalled and installed them:) My bad for putting it wrong. I am as we speak (or type?) testing the hdd's health with Data Lifeguard Support, as you suggested for the OP. I can confirm the quick test passed, and the extended test has about 1 hour remaining. If it also passes, I will try wdidle3.

Should I also set idle time to 300, or can I go a bit lower? I am concerned about overheating my hdd, since that is a risk with increasing idle time, am I correct? EDIT: The extended test passed aswell.
