PC user hoping to switch to mac I use Paperport a LOT to straighten scanned images, then to stack multi-page scans into pdf docs. For OCR I have also found that I get more accurate results if I scan to paperport and then use its ocr function by dragging the page to the word icon. I don't know why this has always worked better than scanning directly into word using ocr settings. Maybe because I straighten the docs first see below There isn't a paperport for mac and I'm wondering if these functions can be done by other programs on the mac or for mac.

I tried pagemaster at one time, which has a version for mac altho a lot of its features say 'windows only', but it didn't have the straighten function. My canon dr120c scanner was supposed to have a straighten as it scanned function, but it never actually worked. How do you mac people straighten a printed document you scan in?

What do you use to OCR printed docs? How do you stack multi page scanned docs into a pdf? Thanks Buddyme2 Devonthink does say it 's a 'Mac replacement for Nuance PaperPort', so I downloaded its manual to take a look. Judging by the size of its zip file, it must have a lot to say. I'm hoping it has a robust search feature. Both Devonthink and Yep seem to emphasize keeping track of pdf and other files rather than creating them, but maybe. I tried pagemaster probably 5 vs 8 awhile back trying to find a replacement for PP - it was similar to paperport, but lacked the straighten feature.

PP was a great little program until Nuance bought it. Back then I discovered PP was a one of a kind program and I'd have to put up w nuisance.

I've got my fingers crossed on Devonthink - it seems the most likely replacement. The neat thing about PP is that you scan your documents into folders which you id in PP as PP folders. So when you open PP you have a desktop s the files from one of the selected folders. You can straighten, crop, adjust brightness, rotate, etc like a photo editor your scanned docs or pics, stack and unstack them, and covert from jpg to pdf to max the pp file format to tiff etc. It's a quick way to neaten up scanned-in documents and stack them into pdf files. So easy I never learned to do it the other ways. PP doesn't have the file tracking features Yep and Devonthink emphasize.

It has a search for the docs in its folders and mostly you organized your scanned docs, pdf or other docs you want PP to manage by putting them into folders you 'import' into PP. Dear MaryBet82 I wonder if you have solved your Paperport replacement problem and can share some insights? I just spent a few days trying to solve the same problem and did not have much luck. Tried Devonthink and it is not quite as user friendly as Paperport. I am particularly uncomfortably with the way Devonthink create a database, instead of leaving the files in the native OS folders, which means any user will be stuck with Devonthink after accumulating years of information on that software.

Edited by john1109, 03 February 2011 - 08:25 PM. No John1109, I never found a program for mac w/ the PP features I liked and used. PageManager is similar to PP and there is a version for mac. I downloaded and tried both the windows version and the mac version. However, the mac version lacked the page straightening function that the windows version had. The convert to pdf function also did not work on my mac for stacked files.

I emailed NewSoft to check whether the straighten function was in the paid version and they said they were 'working' on adding the straighten function to the mac version. So I didn't purchase PageManager. I am currently running PaperPort 9 prof in a virtual machine VirtualBox on my mac. Altho I think I could set up the scanner to scan into the VM and maybe into PaperPort I haven't tried to set that up yet. I scan using the mac scanner drivers, but I use PP to straighten, stack and convert to pdf. PP runs better in my winxp VM on the mac than it did when I ran it on a winxp pc. There's a 30 day trial version of PageManager 9 SE for mac via you can try and see if it works for you.

It makes a My PageManager folder and opens its 'desktop' from that folder - very similar to PP. I can't remember if you can add other folders to the desktop like you can w/ PP. NewSoft seems more user friendly than Nuance, so I'm hoping they get the bugs out of PageManager and I can switch at some point.
